U.N. monitors shot at in Syria, Annan plan crumbles

BEIRUT/UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.N. monitors came under fire on Thursday while trying to investigate reports of a new massacre that raised the pressure on world powers struggling to halt the carnage in Syria, where a U.N.-Arab League peace plan has all but collapsed.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon described as "unspeakable barbarity" the reported killing of at least 78 villagers by forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Speaking at a special session of the U.N. General Assembly on Syria, international envoy Kofi Annan acknowledged his peace plan was not working and said there must be "consequences" for those who do not comply with it.

Ban said hopes for consolidating the peace plan were fading and Annan himself warned the U.N. Security Council that the crisis in Syria could soon spiral out of control, diplomats said. Annan, Ban's predecessor as U.N. Secretary General, called for "substantial pressure" on Damascus to stop the violence.

Opposition activists said up to 40 women and children were among those killed in the Sunni Muslim village of Mazraat al-Qubeir on Wednesday, posting film on the Internet of bloodied or charred bodies.

"There was smoke rising from the buildings and a horrible smell of human flesh burning," said a Mazraat al-Qubeir resident who told how he had watched Syrian troops and "shabbiha" gunmen attack his village as he hid in his family's olive grove.

"It was like a ghost town," he told Reuters by telephone, asking not to be identified because he feared for his safety.

"After the shabbiha and tanks left, the first thing I did was run to my house. It was burned. All seven people from my house were killed. I saw bodies on the stairs, the bathroom and bedroom. They were all burned," the witness said.

The latest killings, less than two weeks after 108 men, women and children were slain in the town of Houla, piled pressure on world powers to stop the bloodshed in Syria. They have been paralyzed by rifts pitting Western and most Arab states against Assad's defenders in Russia, China and Iran.

Despite growing pressure on Moscow, those rifts appeared no closer to resolution on Thursday as leaders of a bloc grouping China, Russia and Central Asian states called for dialogue to resolve the Syria conflict, rather than any firmer action by the Security Council.

The latest reports from the ground cast a long shadow over a day of consultations and debate on Syria at the United Nations.

"Today's news reports of another massacre in (Mazraat) al-Qubeir ... are shocking and sickening," Ban told the 193-nation assembly. "A village apparently surrounded by Syrian forces. The bodies of innocent civilians lying where they were, shot. Some allegedly burned or slashed with knives.

Ban said U.N. monitors, in Syria to check compliance with a truce declared by Annan on April 12 but never implemented, had come under small-arms fire on their way to Mazraat al-Qubeir.

There was no mention of any of the monitors being injured.

The chief of the monitoring mission, General Robert Mood, said Syrian troops and civilians had barred the team, stopping them at checkpoints and turning them back. Officials said the monitors would try again on Friday to visit the site.

A Syrian official denied reports from the village, telling the state news agency that residents had asked security forces for help after "terrorists" killed nine women and children.

Assad, who has yet to comment on Wednesday's violence, decried the Houla killings as "monstrous" and denied his forces were responsible.

Video purportedly from Mazraat al-Qubeir showed the bodies of at least a dozen women and children wrapped in blankets or white shrouds, as well as the remains of burned corpses.

"These are the children of the Mazraat al-Qubeir massacre ... Look, you Arabs and Muslims, is this a terrorist?" asks the cameraman, focusing on a dead infant's face. "This woman was a shepherd, and this was a schoolgirl."

A Hama-based activist using the name Abu Ghazi listed more than 50 names of victims, many from the al-Yateem family, but said some burned bodies could not be identified. The bodies of between 25 and 30 men were taken away by the killers, he said.

Shabbiha, drawn mostly from Assad's minority Alawite sect that is an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam, have been blamed for the killings of civilians from the Sunni Muslim majority. That has raised fears of an Iraq-style sectarian bloodbath and worsened tensions between Shi'ite Iran and mainly Sunni-led Arab states.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague told reporters there was evidence of "escalating criminality" by pro-government forces. "Syria is clearly on the edge ... of deeper violence, of deep sectarian violence; village against village, pro-government militias against opposition areas and of looking more like Bosnia in the 1990s than of Libya last year," he said.

Events in Syria's 15-month-old uprising are difficult to verify due to tight state curbs on international media access.

YEMEN-STYLE TRANSITION?

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the United States was willing to work with all U.N. Security Council members, including Russia, on a conference on Syria's political future, but made clear that Assad must go and his government be replaced with a democratic one.

Moscow has used its U.N. Security Council veto and other tools to protect Assad, who has given Russia a firm foothold in the Middle East and is a buyer of Russian weapons.

A senior Russian diplomat said Moscow would accept a Yemen-style power transition in Syria if it were decided by the people, referring to a deal under which Yemeni leader Ali Abdullah Saleh stepped down in February after a year of unrest.

"The Yemen scenario was discussed by the Yemenis themselves. If this scenario is discussed by Syrians themselves and is adopted by them, we are not against it," Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said, according to the Interfax news agency.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said Russia "most decisively condemns the barbarous acts of violence" reported on Wednesday but he did not assign blame.

Rebel groups in Syria say they are no longer bound by Annan's truce plan and want foreign weapons and other support.

Western leaders, wary of new military engagements in the Muslim world, have offered sympathy but shown no appetite for taking on Assad's military, supplied by Russia and Iran.

Speaking at the U.N. General Assembly, Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin warned countries arming Syria's opposition that such weapons could end up in the hands of "terrorists."

The PWSHEE is the company's second full-on PS3 headset to date, expanding on what it offered with its Wireless Stereo Headset from last year. As we're told, the headset is also ushering in a new Pulse moniker for its PlayStation oriented ear-blasters, although there's no word on what we can expect down the line. For now, this unit packs a lot on paper for its $150 price, touting key features like 7.1 virtual surround sound, PS Vita and cellphone compatibility (thanks to a detachable cable with inline remote / mic), BassImpact technology for massive low-end pulse (get it?), audio profiles, higher-fidelity drivers than the WSH and hidden noise-cancelling microphones for chatting. Does it have the potential to live up to its hype and one-up its $80 predecessor? Join us past the break for our initial impressions.

Manning lawyers quiz State Department officials

By NBC's Ellie Hall

Patrick Semansky / AP

Army Pfc. Bradley Manning, right, is escorted to a courthouse in Fort Meade, Md., Thursday.

Three State Department officials were called as defense witnesses Thursday for Pfc. Bradley Manning as a pre-trial motions hearing continued in the WikiLeaks case, the largest leak ever of U.S. government documents.

Manning's defense team planned to cross-examine the witnesses about a State Department assessment of the May 2010 leaks and how the leaked documents affected U.S. interests abroad.

The testimony will conclude the defense's evidence for its motion to compel discovery, a mandatory pre-trial information exchange of evidence. It is unlikely that the judge, Col. Denise Lind, will rule on this motion Thursday and the court will continue on to a defense petition asking the court to drop 10 of the 22 charges against the 24 year-old analyst.

Manning, a 24-year-old Crescent, Okla., native, faces the possibility of life in prison if convicted of the most serious charge: aiding the enemy. He allegedly sent to the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks hundreds of thousands of classified diplomatic cables and war logs downloaded from government computers while working as an intelligence analyst in Baghdad in late 2009 and early 2010.

The pretrial hearing began Wednesday and is expected to conclude Friday.

Optical Coherence Tomography: Engineers Use Reflected Light To Illuminate Mystery Of Ear Infections

By Larry Greenemeier
(Click here for the original article)

When a person suffers from chronic ear infections the culprit may be a film of bacteria or other microorganisms that builds up behind the eardrum, not unlike dental plaque on unbrushed teeth. Antibiotics are not always effective against this so-called biofilm, so it helps doctors greatly to know whether it is present before prescribing a course of treatment. Whereas conventional scopes aren?t able to see beyond the surface of the eardrum, a team of researchers from the University of Illinois has developed a new tool that can shed some light on the situation.

The device uses a non-invasive imaging system called optical coherence tomography (OCT) to collect high-resolution, three-dimensional tissue images from beams of light sent into the ear canal. The system can scan through the eardrum to any biofilm behind it. The researchers, who liken the process to ultrasound imaging that uses light instead of sonic waves, described their work last week in the online Early Edition of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The light scatters and reflects from the tympanic membrane?which separates the external ear from the middle ear?as well as any biofilm that might be behind the membrane. The researchers measure this reflection to determine whether a biofilm is present as well as its thickness and position against the eardrum.

The research team, led by University of Illinois electrical and computer engineering professor Stephen Boppart, tested their ear OCT device at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Ill. There they scanned patients with diagnosed chronic ear infections, as well as patients with normal ears. The device identified biofilms in all patients with chronic infections, while none of the normal ears showed evidence of biofilms, according to the researchers.

A closer study of ear infections, the most common conditions that pediatricians treat, could lead to a better understanding of the relationship between biofilms and hearing loss. Boppart and his team also plan to adapt their OCT technique to other areas of medicine with the hope that such imaging technology can be useful in diagnosing health problems originating in the eyes, mouth, nose or skin.

Direct Sales and Top-Tier Internet Marketing | Praktikak

If you?re researching home-based businesses, you may have come across a ?top-tier? internet marketing opportunity and wondered exactly what the term meant. A ?top-tier? program is an internet marketing opportunity which deals with direct sales. That is to say you sell a product directly to someone and get paid up front (no waiting period). This is in contrast to say an MLM program where you are dependent on the sales made by your downline (people who you have personally recruited into the company) to generate income for you.

In general, top-tier program generally attracts a high-calibre customer? that is to say, a customer who is genuinely serious about starting their own home-based business? not a ?tire-kicker?, and not someone who is ?maybe? looking to start their own home-based business. How do top-tier companies filter out tire-kickers? This is usually done by having a paid application in place in order to see if you qualify to join the company.

A lot of people question this process, however what they don?t realize is the insane amount of people looking to work from home. In a top-tier program, you will generally sign up under a mentor. It would be literally impossible for the mentor to provide the required training to anyone expressing any interest in the program (most of whom won?t be serious enough to put in the required effort to succeed anyway). The application will generally filter-out those with lack of interest, and ensure you work with a finite number of high-calibre like-minded individuals.

A top-tier internet marketing program will generally sell products which generate 00 in commission or more per sale. Commissions are paid to you directly by your customer, hence you receive your commission right away. Although you will be generating your commissions through sales, your job in a direct sales company is not as a sales person, and actually far from it. Your job will be to market your business opportunity. That is to say, you will be getting your opportunity out there online to as many people as possible through a variety of methods. If someone wishes to join you, they come to you, as opposed to you seeking them out and trying to push your opportunity on them. A reputable top-tier company will train you to market your opportunity with the best strategies so you?re not left high and dry wondering how to proceed.

There is currently a huge market out there in the online direct sales industry. If you?re looking to start your own home-based business, do your due diligence and find a reputable direct sales opportunity to join.

Is Your Fraud Prevention Strategy a Competitive Differentiator? It ...

In recent years, consumer confidence has largely been driven by how secure customers feel when they purchase goods or services on a particular website. According to CIFAS, the UK?s fraud prevention service, Internet security may soon be having a greater impact on the organizations that consumers choose to do business with.

In the article, ?Account takeover fraud continues to rise relentlessly,? CIFAS chief executive, Peter Hurst, said online merchants should take note of the fact that with online fraud on the rise, their security track record could become a key selling point for earning new business in the future.

?Businesses that manage to combine convenience with strong security protocols are those that will both prosper and come to be trusted by their customers. Internet security has the potential to become a key factor in the way that consumers choose who to transact with.?

These conclusions stem from recent figures released by CIFAS, which found that hijacking bank, credit cards and other accounts is becoming one of the most prevalent fraud threats to organizations and individuals. Some of the numbers that verify this stance included:

  • 71% of all account takeovers in the UK from January to April 2012 occurred online.
  • Account takeover fraud rose 82% in the first four months of 2012 compared to the same period last year.
  • The takeover of plastic card accounts (mostly credit cards) nearly doubled since the first four months of 2011, and accounts for more than 40% of all account takeovers in the UK.

Richard Hurley, Communications Manager at CIFAS, said the convenience of the Internet continues to play a significant role in the way criminals defraud businesses.

?The Internet did not create fraud, but the convenience and ease it offers honest individuals is also available to fraudsters. Furthermore, with so many accounts now operated online (and frauds committed in the same way) it is likely that the internet is the channel being used by criminals to obtain the data required to commit these frauds.?

This poses an important security challenge for today?s businesses: protect your customers or risk losing them.

With Internet security having a greater influence on an organization?s ability to retain existing customers, as well as attract new ones, having effective security tools in place could become a significant differentiator for companies that do business over the Internet.

A fraud prevention solution like iovation?s ReputationManager 360 gives online businesses an exceptional layer of defense that helps stop online crimes such as credit card fraud, identity theft, and account takeovers, among many others. Through advanced device identification uniquely recognizing the devices connecting to online businesses (not the stolen information fraudsters often use to answer security questions and take over accounts), iovation helps businesses prevent account takeovers and protect their customers and accounts, and in doing so, improve customer retention and brand reputation.

AFP - A neighborhood watch volunteer accused of shooting dead an unarmed black teenager in Florida was in jail Monday after a judge revoked his bail for allegedly misleading the court.

George Zimmerman, 28, faces second degree murder charges over the death of Trayvon Martin, 17, who was heading home from a late-night run to a convenience store in Sanford, Florida when he was shot following a confrontation.

The racially-charged case caused an uproar in the United States, mainly over the authorities' initial reluctance to press charges against Zimmerman, who insists that he acted in self-defense in the February 26 incident.

But the judge on Friday revoked Zimmerman's bail and ordered him to return to jail after prosecutors argued he had misled the court about having no money, despite tens of thousands of dollars sitting in online fundraising accounts.

Zimmerman turned himself in shortly before a 48-hour deadline to surrender expired.

Minutes after Zimmerman was escorted back to a solitary cell in handcuffs, defense attorney Mark O'Mara told reporters he planned to seek a hearing to ensure his client is freed.

The attorney said he is "just hoping the judge will give us an audience and we can further explain away why what happened seems to have happened."

O'Mara said he understood that the veracity of Zimmerman's story might have been dealt a blow if the court feels it had been deliberately misled, but insisted it was a misunderstanding.

"I don't think it addresses the case specifically. Certainly there is a credibility question that now needs to be rehabilitated by explaining away what they were thinking when they did what they did if that's what happened. We'll address it," O'Mara said.

The judge in April set Zimmerman's bond at $150,000, but prosecutors say that figure relied on "false representations and statements" by the defendant and his wife.

Zimmerman's wife testified at the time that the couple had no assets or income to put toward a bond. The suspect's father said he was prepared to take out a second mortgage on his house to help raise the money.

O'Mara expressed the hope the issue will be resolved soon.

"The vast majority of the funds in question are in an independently managed trust, and neither Mr. Zimmerman or his attorneys have direct access to the money," Zimmerman's defense said in a statement on its website, which expressed hope that Zimmerman's "voluntary surrender to Sanford police will help demonstrate to the court that he is not a flight risk."

Prosecutors also accused Zimmerman on Friday of owning two passports and failing to surrender the second one at the bond hearing in April.

Zimmerman had reported in 2004 that it had been lost or stolen, but in its motion, the prosecution quoted jailhouse calls between Zimmerman and his wife talking about the second passport.

Zimmerman's return to jail represents just the latest twist in the case, which prompted protests in several US cities and comments from President Barack Obama, who said if he'd had a son he would have looked like Trayvon.

Prosecutors say Martin was simply "minding his own business" when he was accosted and shot dead by Zimmerman after buying some Skittles and a bottle of ice tea from a local store.

Zimmerman told police he had been tracking Martin after viewing him as suspicious but shot purely in self-defense after being assaulted. Police photos released later showed a bloody gash on the back of the guard's head.

Seminole County Sheriff Donald Eslinger told reporters that Zimmerman was "quiet and cooperative," as he was booked Sunday.

He was to have "a new mugshot taken and would be fingerprinted again, too. He will be kept in administrative confinement with a cell to himself, the same arrangement as before," Eslinger said.

On his website Sunday, O'Mara wrote that Zimmerman's defense team coordinated his re-arrest with the Sanford Police Department "to ensure Mr Zimmerman's security."

"While out on bond, Mr Zimmerman has been living in a secure, undisclosed location as there are significant threats against his life," he added.

Cabrera's 2 HRs lift Tigers past Yankees

By NOAH TRISTER

DETROIT (AP) - Miguel Cabrera hit two prodigious homers and Omir Santos' sacrifice fly in the ninth inning gave the Detroit Tigers a wild 4-3 victory over the New York Yankees on Saturday night.

Detroit overcame a blown save by Jose Valverde (3-1) and an awful night of defense from Santos, a third-string catcher pressed into duty because of injuries. Santos made two errors and allowed five stolen bases - but his fly to right off Boone Logan with the bases loaded in the ninth was deep enough to score Brennan Boesch.

David Phelps (1-2) took the loss.

Valverde hit two batters and walked two in the ninth, allowing New York to tie it after Cabrera's homer onto a camera platform gave Detroit a 3-2 lead.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi and hitting coach Kevin Long were ejected in the seventh.

Boesch hit a one-out single in the ninth off Phelps and went to third on a single by Jhonny Peralta. Logan came in, and Ramon Santiago pinch-hit for left fielder Don Kelly. The Yankees ended up intentionally walking Santiago to load the bases for Santos.

Santiago was Detroit's only healthy position player on the bench because of injuries to catchers Alex Avila and Gerald Laird and outfielder Andy Dirks. If the game had gone to extra innings, the Tigers may have had to lose their designated hitter by moving Delmon Young to left - or perhaps Cabrera could have gone to the outfield.

But Santos made all that moot with his winning fly.

Valverde pitched about as poorly as possible without giving up a hit in the ninth. He hit Russell Martin with a pitch to start the inning, and pinch-runner Dewayne Wise stole second. Derek Jeter appeared to be trying to bunt, but Valverde walked him. After Curtis Granderson's flyout, the Yankees pulled off a double steal, and Valverde plunked Alex Rodriguez to load the bases.

Robinson Cano popped out, but Valverde walked Mark Teixeira on a 3-2 pitch to tie it. Santos kept the rally alive by missing a popup in foul territory for an error, but Raul Ibanez grounded out, leaving the game tied at 3.

Cabrera hit solo homers in the fourth and eighth, each well beyond the wall in center. The second homer - his 11th of the year - traveled an estimated 433 feet, but that only measured how far the ball went before disappearing into the camera structure, not where it would have landed.

Cabrera opened the scoring with a 436-foot shot in the fourth. The ball sailed beyond Granderson in center and hit the ivy-covered barrier above two levels of bushes beyond the outfield wall - a bit to the right of where his second homer ended up.

Kelly, playing in left with Dirks out, reached above the wall to rob Teixeira of what was nearly an opposite-field home run in the fourth. In the fifth, Kelly singled and scored on Quintin Berry's single to make it 2-0.

Ibanez had a run-scoring groundout in the sixth for New York.

Rick Porcello allowed a run and six hits in six innings for the Tigers, and Detroit held on through an eventful seventh. Phil Coke allowed consecutive singles to start the inning, and Joaquin Benoit came on for the Tigers.

After Jeter's sacrifice, Granderson hit a foul pop toward the New York dugout that made it out of play. Plate umpire Bob Davidson then signaled an ejection, and Girardi came out onto the field to argue. In an animated argument near home plate, Girardi threw his hat to the ground, and by the time it was over, he and Long had both been tossed.

Granderson struck out, and Rodriguez reached for an outside pitch and hit a popup to end the inning.

New York starter Hiroki Kuroda allowed two runs and seven hits in seven innings.

(AP) ? Queen Elizabeth II went to the races Saturday, at the start of a four-day celebration of her 60 years on the throne.

Later in the weekend she'll make a trip down the River Thames, and then take in a concert ? all accompanied by tens of thousands of her subjects, coming out to fete a monarch whose longevity has given her the status of the nation's favorite grandmother.

Diamond Jubilee festivities officially began Saturday with a 41-gun salute fired by the King's Troop, Royal Horse Artillery at Horse Guards Parade in central London.

The 86-year-old monarch and her husband, Prince Philip, arrived at Epsom racecourse south of the capital for the Derby, one of the year's biggest horse-racing meetings. The queen waved to the 130,000-strong crowd as she was driven down the racecourse in a Bentley bearing the Royal Standard ? the car's sun roof kept shut under gray skies ? before settling down to watch the races from the royal box.

She was accompanied by members of the royal family including her sons Prince Andrew and Prince Edward and Andrew's daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.

The royals were treated to an aerial display by members of the British Army's Red Devils parachute team before the main event ? the racing.

The monarch is a racing fan and horse breeder who reads the Racing Post each day over breakfast, although unlike many of her subjects she does not gamble.

"She's incredibly knowledgeable. Her knowledge of thoroughbreds and breeding goes way back," said Anthony Cane, chairman of Epsom Downs Racecourse.

The queen took the throne in 1952 on the death of her father, King George VI, and most Britons have known no other monarch.

Despite cool, damp weather in much of the country, hundreds of thousands of people are expected to participate in celebrations, including street parties, Sunday's 1,000-boat flotilla down the River Thames and a Monday pop concert in front of Buckingham Palace featuring Elton John and Paul McCartney.

Jubilee events end Tuesday with a religious service at St. Paul's Cathedral, a carriage procession through the streets of London and the queen's appearance with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren on the palace balcony.

Prime Minister David Cameron ? the 12th British leader of the queen's reign ? paid tribute to the monarch's "extraordinary level of physical energy, mental energy, and above all devotion to her people, to the institutions of this country, to the way our democracy works."

Not everyone in Britain will be celebrating. The anti-monarchist group Republic plans a riverbank protest as the flotilla goes by on Sunday, followed by a pub night where royal refuseniks can drown their sorrows.

With pictures of the monarch splashed across newspaper front pages, the left-leaning Guardian provided a button on its website that removed all jubilee stories.

But many Britons embraced the jubilee spirit ? a tribute to a monarch whose popularity cuts across all ages, social classes and political affiliations.

Writers and religious leaders used the occasion to reflect on how Britain has changed over the queen's reign, from a war-scarred imperial power to a middle-sized power with oversized cultural clout.

Bishop of London Richard Chartres said the queen's steadfast presence had helped the country adjust to rapid change.

"The quiet dignity of the queen and the way in which she and her family have reached out to include newly established British communities has provided a focus for continuing but expanding national self-respect and so has assisted the peaceful transformation of our national identity," he wrote in a jubilee pamphlet.

Former manager says Clemens adapted late in career

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Roger Clemens lost something off his fastball in his 40s but still succeeded by pitching smarter, his former manager testified Thursday.

"He continued to have great success, but for different reasons," said defense witness Phil Garner, who managed Clemens with the Houston Astros from 2004-2006. "He didn't just overpower teams; he outsmarted teams ... He wasn't as domineering as he was earlier."

Clemens is on trial for allegedly lying to Congress in 2008 when he denied using steroids or human growth hormone. Defense lawyers are trying to demonstrate that Clemens used smarts and hard work ? not performance-enhancing drugs ? to post exceptional numbers at an age when most players are retired.

In Clemens' first year with Houston, in 2004, he won his seventh Cy Young Award and posted an excellent 2.98 earned run average, nearly a full run better than the previous season, though most pitchers making that switch from the American to National league improve their ERAs by some fraction of a run. In his second year with Houston, when Clemens turned 43, his ERA dropped even further, to an extraordinarily good 1.87.

Garner said that one way Clemens got smarter was by pitching around really good hitters, then going after weaker ones. Garner said the pitcher's speed dropped from 95-97 mph in his early 30s to 90-92 mph.

"There's no question he had aged," said Garner, who sometimes referred to the pitcher by his nickname, Rocket.

Supporting the defense contention that Clemens succeeded through hard work, Garner recalled seeing the pitcher at the ballpark in spring training at 7:30 a.m. Clemens worked out in a flak jacket with 60 pounds of weights, then went for a run, Garner said.

A couple of times, Garner shouted as he imitated Clemens' competitive outbursts.

"What is going on?!" Garner recalled Clemens yelling at himself as he paced back and forth at the end of the dugout. "Are you going to pitch tonight or are you not going to pitch tonight?! Are you going to get anybody out tonight?!"

On Wednesday, two catchers who were teammates of Clemens said he played with integrity and refused to cut corners, the opposite of the image painted by prosecutors of a man who cheated to gain an edge and then lied about it to Congress.

"I don't think he'd cheat," said former journeyman catcher Charlie O'Brien, who caught Clemens' games for much of the 1997 season with the Toronto Blue Jays. O'Brien portrayed Clemens as such a stickler that he'd refuse to throw scuffed baseballs because he considered it cheating.

The other backstop was Darrin Fletcher, Clemens' catcher with the Jays in 1998. When Hardin said good afternoon, Fletcher replied, "How we doing?" and frequently called the lawyer by his first name.

He said Clemens was a "big strong man" who set the standard for work ethic.

"Did Roger Clemens ever cut corners?" Hardin asked.

"Cut corners?" he replied with a taken-aback look and a smile. "No."

He gave up some of Clemens' trade secrets as a pitcher. Clemens, for example, would purse his lips on the mound to ask for curveballs.

"You're not making a comeback any time are you, Roger?" Fletcher said. "I'm not giving anything away, am I?" Clemens laughed.

Fletcher said it was important to make sure that batters didn't steal signs, because "the whole integrity of the game is ruined if the hitter knows what's coming."

He also testified that he didn't see Clemens at a pool party at teammate Jose Canseco's house in Florida in June of that season, but Fletcher also said he left the party around 1:30 p.m. A government witness recalled seeing Clemens at the party later in the day. One of the charges against Clemens is that he lied when he told Congress that he wasn't at the party at all.

Fletcher drew more laughter when he said it would have left an impression if he had seen Clemens.

"I've always wanted to see Roger in a bathing suit," he said, and Clemens chuckled again.

Clemens joined the Blue Jays at the age of 34 as a free agent after the Boston Red Sox did not re-sign him following the 1996 season. Boston's then-general manager, Dan Duquette, said at the time that Clemens was in the twilight of his career, but Clemens won the Cy Young Award the two next seasons for the Blue Jays.

In that second season in Toronto, Clemens met strength coach Brian McNamee, who says he injected the pitcher with steroids and HGH and testified that he had the impression the Clemens had used steroids previously. The government used its cross-examination of witnesses Wednesday to reinforce its claim that Clemens turned to performance-enhancing drugs to help his aging body recover more quickly during the physically demanding major league seasons.

The defense says it will call McNamee's estranged wife, Eileen, to testify, but her lawyer said Thursday that he wanted to make sure that her previously granted immunity remains intact. That's because McNamee, during his testimony, may have implicated her in a number of areas, such as possible mail fraud. The government had at one point planned to call her as a witness, but decided not to for tactical reasons. Clemens' lawyers want her testimony to help them try to discredit McNamee's credibility. At U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton's urging, Eileen McNamee's lawyer will meet with government prosecutors Friday to discuss the immunity issue.

Edwards not guilty on one count; mistrial on others

The jury delivered a unanimous verdict on one of the six felony counts and found Edwards not guilty of receiving illegal campaign contributions from heiress Rachel 'Bunny' Mellon. The judge declared a mistrial on the five other counts. Edwards later told reporters that he knew he had not done anything illegal but that he was accountable for his behavior. NBC's Lisa Myers reports.

By NBC News' Michael Austin and Stacey Klein and msnbc.com's Mike Brunker

Updated at 4:34 p.m. ET -- Capping a day of dramatic turnarounds, the?jury in the campaign finance trial of former presidential candidate John Edwards found him not guilty on Thursday on one count of accepting illegal campaign contributions and said it was deadlocked on the remaining five charges.

U.S. District Judge Catherine Eagles then declared a mistrial on the remaining charges. It was not immediately clear if prosecutors intend to seek a retrial on those charges.

In a statement outside the federal courthouse in Greensboro, N.C., Edwards acknowledged that he had behaved poorly, but said he had not acted illegally.

Read Thursday's court transcript

?I want to make sure that everyone hears from me ? that while I don?t believe I did anything illegal, ?I did an awful, awful lot that was wrong and there is no one else responsible for my sins,? said Edwards, who did not testify at the trial and took no questions.

The count on which the jury?reached a?"not guilty" verdict involved contributions from?Edwards' contributor Rachel "Bunny" Mellon.

NBC station?WNCN?of Raleigh, N.C., reported that when the decision came, Edwards closed his eyes, rubbed his face and smiled at his daughter, Cate. He then hugged his daughter and?his elderly parents while whispering to them, "I told you this would be OK," WCNC reported. Earlier, the jury of eight men and four women told Eagles?that it had reached a verdict on all six felony accounts against Edwards. But after the jury returned to the courtroom, the foreperson stated?that jurors?had reached a unanimous decision on only one count.?Eagles then sent them back to the jury room to resume deliberations.

The charges against Edwards, 58,?arose while he was in the midst of the 2008 race for the Democratic presidential nomination, and were focused on about $1 million in donations?from?two wealthy donors, Fred Baron and?Mellon, a billionnaire banking heiress. The money?was used to support and?hide Edwards' pregnant mistress, Rielle Hunter.

NBC News' Gabe Gutierrez reports on John Edwards' campaign finance trial after the jury found him not guilty on one count. The judge declared a mistrial on the remaining five counts. NBC News' Pete Williams, Savannah Guthrie and former prosecutor John Q. Kelly provide analysis on the case.

Prosecutors argued that the?money amounted to?illegal and unreported campaign contributions?at a time when federal?donations were capped at $2,300; the defense said?the money was a "gift" intended to allow Edwards to hide the affair from his ailing wife, Elizabeth, and the public. Elizabeth Edwards, who had previously been diagnosed with breast cancer, separated from John Edwards in early 2010 and died later that year.

If found guilty of all six counts, Edwards could have faced up to 30 years in prison and a $1.5 million fine.? Each individual count carries a maximum sentence of 5 years and a fine of up to $250,000.

Attorneys for Edwards, a former U.S. senator from North Carolina and the 2004 Democratic vice presidential nominee,?and prosecutors alike painted him?as a liar and a bad husband. Where they differed was?whether the scheme to hide his affair amounted to a crime.

The jurors?were charged with deciding?if Edwards "knowingly and willfully" violated a 1971 campaign finance law by orchestrating the scheme to support and hide Hunter.

Former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards has faced public and private challenges throughout his life and career.

Prosecutors alleged in their closing arguments that Edwards manipulated the campaign finance system to conceal the affair with Hunter, a videographer on his 2008 presidential campaign staff.

He "clearly knew the law and decided to violate it in order to salvage his campaign," Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Higdon said, accusing Edwards of cynically seeking to "keep her quiet" until the election was over "and his wife (had) passed away."

Lead defense attorney Abbe Lowell admitted in his closing arguments that Edwards had committed many "moral wrongs," but he insisted that none of the misdeeds was "a legal one."

"John's conduct is shameful, but it's human," Lowell told the jury.

Letters and other notes from?Mellon appeared to be crucial to the jurors' deliberations ? from their first day of discussions, they requested a stream of exhibits related to the nearly $750,000 she contributed.

Mellon, who is 101 years old, didn't testify during the trial, but her attorney and financial adviser, Alex Forger, offered extensive testimony that Mellon knew that her donations were intended to fund the "Hunter problem" and weren't given as campaign contributions.

A possible turning point came in mid-May, when Judge Eagles barred most of the defense's planned testimony from current and former members of the Federal Election Commission about a federal audit that concluded that the money didn't amount to campaign contributions subject to federal regulation.

Eagles ruled that evidence about the FEC audit was inadmissible because it couldn't be determined exactly what the commission knew or was told at the time.
