Wall St set to open higher with Italy vote due (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stocks were set for a higher open on Tuesday as Italian lawmakers prepared for a crucial vote on public finances that marks the latest turn in the long-simmering euro zone debt crisis.

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi faced a crucial vote on public finances in parliament that could derail his center-right coalition if enough party rebels desert him. Berlusconi's closest coalition ally told him to resign.

"There is not a lot to focus on in terms of fundamentals, so we are still trapped in this headline box, if you will, and every movement seems to be based on that," said Kevin Kruszenski, director of equity trading at KeyBanc Capital Markets in Cleveland.

"Maybe it is just another nail in the coffin of the entire euro crisis, slowly but surely it seems to be sort of unfolding and progress is being made."

Italian 10-year borrowing costs touched a new record of 6.71 percent on Tuesday, raising the risk that Rome's massive debt -- the second highest in Europe at 120 percent of gross domestic product -- could spiral out of control.

Greek party leaders struggled to agree on a new prime minister in hopes a unity coalition can save the country's finances and end the chaos threatening the euro. The outgoing prime minister told an emergency cabinet session a consensus decision on a new leader would be made by Tuesday night.

The European Union has asked Greece to produce a letter promising implementation on a bailout deal and have it signed by various officials.

S&P 500 futures rose 8 points and were above fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration of the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures gained 78 points while Nasdaq 100 futures climbed 20.5 points.

European shares rose 1.8 percent, bouncing back from two days of losses, as some encouraging earnings news and as investors bought beaten-down stocks after losses in the past two sessions. (.EU)

With little on the U.S. economic calendar this week and earnings season near an end, investors will be fixed on euro zone headlines. U.S. markets have been closely tied to the fortunes of the euro while volatility has been tethered to sovereign debt.

An experimental antidepressant from AstraZeneca Plc (AZN.L)(AZN.N) and Targacept Inc (TRGT.O) failed to meet the goal of changing a key depression rating score in the first of a series of pivotal clinical trials, a setback for both companies.

Targacept tumbled nearly 55 percent to $8.69 in premarket and U.S.-listed AstraZeneca shares (AZN.N) lost 2.6 percent to $46.11.

Activision Blizzard Inc (ATVI.O) gained 2.9 percent to $14.14 premarket as the video-game maker began selling the highly anticipated new entry in its "Call of Duty" series.

Fresh iPhone Apps for Nov. 8: Hello Vino update, iBeatThat, Ninja Pong, Sky Gamblers: Rise of Glory (Appolicious)

Your iPhone can help in lots of different ways. Using today?s Fresh iPhone Apps, it can help you choose the right wine for dinner with Hello Vino, and it can help turn Facebook into a giant extreme sports competition with iBeatThat. You can read about both of them below. It can also function as a great portable gaming device, thanks to titles like Ninja Pong, a casual game in which you help bounce ninjas from one side of the screen to the other, and Sky Gamblers, a World War I flight simulator with a pretty intense online multiplayer mode.

Get your wine recommendations instantly with Hello Vino. It?s designed to help you pair food with wine offerings so you always know what the best drink is for each occasion. You don?t need any kind of wine knowledge to use Hello Vino, the app does all the work when you input what you?re eating, allowing you to read wine reviews and even save wines for later when you find some you like.

A big update to Hello Vino makes it a whole lot more social, adding Facebook and Twitter integration that allows you to share your favorite wine discoveries with others. You can also use your iOS device?s camera to scan wine labels with the app?s new label recognition feature. It also includes reviews from other users to help you make your decisions.

iBeatThat (iPhone, iPad) Free

Like sports? Turn every sport into a competition between you and your friends with iBeatThat, an app that turns life into something of a big game of HORSE. The app lets you connect with your friends via Facebook, and then post your accomplishments in extreme sports like snowboarding or skateboarding. The idea is, your friends see what you?ve done, and then try to best you. Then they post it, you see it, and you beat them.

iBeatThat lets you record your accomplishments using your iOS device?s GPS features and its video camera. You can post your videos to YouTube and Facebook using the app, and once you start besting your buddies, you can assign first, second and third place ribbons to each. You can keep track of your titles using the app, and search through various competitions in order to see what others are doing or take part.

Ninja Pong (iPhone, iPad) $0.99

A casual game similar to classic brick breaker-type games, Ninja Pong is pretty simple. In each level, you control a platform that bridges the gap between the left side of the stage and the right. Ninjas need to jump from one side to the other, but they can?t quite make it. You need to position the platform to allow the ninjas to bounce off it and make it to the other side.

Ninja Pong comes with two modes ? Arcade and Endless ? and in each, your job is to bounce as many ninjas across as you can, while avoiding bombs and flaming arrows that can destroy your platform. You can also catch things like coins, which you can spend on items in the game, and grab collectibles that can increase your score even more. Game Center support also supplies online leaderboards and achievements.

Your iOS devices? internal technology does a pretty good job of turning your iPhone or iPad into a flight simulator, and Sky Gamblers: Rise of Glory takes full advantage of all those spiffy electronic gizmos. The game puts you in the pilot seat of a World War I airplane and tasks you with flying through 12 different campaign levels, using your device?s tilt and accelerometer capabilities to steer.

In addition to Sky Gamblers? story mode, you can also create your own missions in its custom mode and even play online against other pilots in multiplayer with as many as seven other flyers. It includes 10 historically accurate planes, and also features Game Center support to give you leaderboards you can use to test your skills against other players all over the world.

Frank Ocean, Odd Future's much-buzzed-about crooner, seemed to be just getting started when he suddenly canceled his scheduled Sunday show in New York just one hour before his set time citing illness. The jaunt was interrupted only a day after Ocean played the first date on a mini-tour that kicked off in his native New Orleans on Saturday.

Back in February, Ocean independently released Nostalgia, Ultra via Tumblr, and since then the popular mixtape has been pegged for re-release on Def Jam, thanks to the hit singles "Swim Good" and "Novacane," which both made their way from the Internet to the radio. In early October, the 24-year-old singer/songwriter announced plans to embark on an intimate six-city tour in support of the mixtape.

The Odd Future member kicked off his short-lived run with a solo show in his hometown of New Orleans on Saturday night, but after performing soundcheck at the Bowery Ballroom the following day, he canceled the show.

While some fans were already lined up outside of the venue, Ocean retreated to Tumblr to pen a new post titled "New York Is Cancelled."

"Or should i say postponed," Ocean wrote. "I played last night in new orleans, on antibiotics and some other meds. got sick a cpl days before i left los angeles. woke up this morning in new york and could barely speak. called a doctor to my hotel, got a steroid shot. took some more meds. laid in bed all day till soundcheck, got to the venue and could barely sing any of my songs. im really sorry yall. i been workin on this show for months, did everything i could to make it special for yall. i'll be back soon as i'm healthy. thats my word. tickets will be valid for that, or you guys can get refunded. damn this sh--."

During his New Orleans show on Saturday night, it took the shy performer some time to warm up to the crowd. He delivered several tracks from Nostalgia, Ultra, including "Lovecrimes," "Swim Good" and "Novacane," while slipping in some material from his upcoming album. Ocean also performed the hooks from his Watch the Throne features "No Church in the Wild" and "Made in America."

Before the cancellation, the tour was expected to stop in the Netherlands, London and Paris before concluding in Los Angeles on November 15; no word yet on whether those shows will go on.

TV talent shows scout young singers; new Bieber? (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Hey, kids, are you falling short of your pop stardom dreams? With so many TV talent shows after you, there's scant excuse for reaching adolescence without a record deal.

Among the options is "The X Factor," Simon Cowell's extravaganza, with the door open to contestants age 12 and up. The finalists picked last week include more than a dozen solo and group singers under age 18 ? but they face competition from wily adult contenders, including a 60-year-old.

"The Voice" (minimum age: 16) and "American Idol" (15) also pit the young against the old, or at least older, this being youth-obsessed television. "America's Got Talent" has a no-ages-barred policy.

There are, however, level playing fields for tender talent. The Hub channel's "Majors & Minors" is exclusively for aspiring pop stars from 10 to 16, while Disney Channel's "Next Big Thing" (aka "N.B.T.," also on Radio Disney), accepts those ages 13 to 17.

"Majors & Minors," airing 7 p.m. EST Sunday, tracks 12 youngsters through a season of work and competition with the help of pop singers including Brandy, Avril Lavigne, will.i.am and Jennifer Hudson. Colbie Caillat is this week's mentor, with Adam Lambert set for Nov. 13.

No contestant is eliminated but one "star-in-the-making," as the show puts it, gets a record and concert deal with the RCA-Jive Label Group. The winner will be picked in January by the show's producers, vocal coaches and others who work with the youngsters.

"I feel like some of the other shows that are pure competition shows are very dismissive," said executive producer Evan Bogart. "We think all 12 kids are very talented. ... For us, it's a shame to send them home after a week or two weeks. Let's give them the benefit of all they can learn."

Brandy, a child performer who starred as a teenager on TV's "Moesha," was attracted to "Majors & Minors" for that reason. She's a recurring mentor.

"I started very young and always wished I could get in touch with famous people that inspired me and already experienced things I hadn't and I wanted to know about," she said. "I thought it would be great to be a part of these young artists' lives and give back to them what I've learned in the industry."

The 32-year-old also is struck by the generational difference. "The talent is insane now," Brandy said, and has a wealth of ways to get attention.

"There were fewer opportunities when I was coming up. There wasn't `American Idol' or `Majors & Minors.' `Star Search' was the only show out there. You had to grind and grind to be discovered," she said.

Talent and the ability to handle the show's challenges were key in choosing the contestants, Bogart said. And there was another important element.

"I wasn't going to cast anyone who was overtrained. I didn't want to spend three weeks `de-learning' anybody," he said, adding, "We saw plenty of `pageantry' kids, those who were told every step to take for every note."

Instead, he wanted youngsters who "were primed for someone like myself to step in and say, `I know what you're going through and I want to help you,'" said Bogart, a songwriter (including Rihanna's "S.O.S.") and music executive.

"N.B.T." takes a more traditional approach, with its compact field of five contestants gradually whittled down by viewer voting over 10 weeks. The winner will be announced during a Dec. 7 live concert.

The contest, with episodes debuting Fridays, offers a "great way to showcase brand-new talent and expose them to our audience, who's looking for other artists to relate to and get excited about," said Kelly Edwards, Radio Disney's executive director of music and programming.

"N.B.T." launched on Radio Disney four years ago and branched out to TV in its second year. It gives singers a potential entry point to the Disney apparatus that has successfully marketed young sensations including the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez.

Edwards spots contenders in clubs, online, through video submissions from kids or their families and with the help of talent representatives.

"I joke that I'm like a 12-year-old," Edwards said, with her radar always on for new performers who will appeal to preteens and teenagers. "I found some of my favorite artists looking on YouTube, some of them kids who are not looking to be discovered but are expressing themselves online."

The winner gets Disney concert exposure ? season two winner Jasmine Sagginario opened for Justin Bieber ? and a shot at recording. But, as with other talent contests, it's not all about being No. 1. Season three finalist Coco Jones is co-starring in a 2012 Disney Channel movie, "Let It Shine."

Contestants who "resonate with the audience and who have the talent and skills" can find opportunities at the Walt Disney Co., Edwards said.

Grown-ups need not apply.
