Anthony Robbins noted that ?to effectively communicate, we must realize that we are all different in the way we perceive the world and use this understanding as a guide to our communication with others? (Communication Quotes, n.d.).? This thought sets the stage for our discussion of the critical communication that occurs, verbal and non-verbal, between you and your boss. Harris, Wheeler, & Kacmar (2009) discuss the impacts of the leader-member exchange theory on well-being, job satisfaction, retention, promotion, and a litany of positive and negative outcomes.? Stated more directly, the interrelationship between you and your direct supervisor is a critical and important one, and the avenue for marketing, advertising, or communicating that relationship is described in the context of the leader-member exchange (pp. 371-372).? Your boss, supervisor, mentor, or leader develops a relationship with you based on the requirements of the organization, and the job description of the billet you were assessed to be employed. That is their stated role and responsibility, so what can you do to ensure effective ?interpersonal communication??

Building and Defining Employment Relationships

Communication is not solely the domain of the words you may speak; rather it is any form of discourse or expression that conveys meaning, acceptance, or may assist in building that all-important relationship between you and your boss.? Your stance, facial expression, word choice or use or punctuation, willingness and eagerness to accept an assignment (or otherwise); the list is endless but the point to be made is that they all constitute ?communication?.? And communication defines the relationship, which builds with each word and each expression, between you and your supervisor.? That relationship may define you as one of the ?in group?, whereby positive relations may gain you greater span of authority, responsibility and greater access to the boss, or the ?out group? who are provided lower levels of choice in their work assignments and greater control or constraints levied by the leader.

Communication and Building Trust

Freeman Teague stated that ?nothing is so simple that it cannot be misunderstood? and this is so true, but why?? I would like you to stop a moment and place yourself in your boss?s shoes and remember that the process of communication has essentially three steps: create the thought, concept, idea, expression of feelings, or information; send/delivery in an encoded format in symbols such as words, body posture, facial expression, or written words; and the receiver decodes or translates the symbols, concepts, or information?simple right?!

Degradation of the Signal

No it is not, and often it is misunderstood and misrepresented based on issues with translations, experiences and the many barriers to communication that we will discuss in more detail in future posts.? One may state that all communication from one human being to another suffers from degradation of intent and meaning.? So, essentially everything I say and do, and express is not received by my boss in the exact manner I intended?and yet my very livelihood, and my role and responsibility are based on communication! ?Epictetus noted that ?we have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak? (Communication Quotes, n.d.)? So perhaps, we may suggest that it is the total communication process with all of its varied means, modes, and venues which we require training, discipline, and attention in the modern-day employment work environment. Moreover we require focus and especial care and attention to the interpersonal communication that takes place routinely between the leader-member, or you and your boss (Herzberg et al., 1990, pp. 63-64)!

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A new clue in one of the 20th century's most enduring mysteries could soon uncover the fate of American aviator Amelia Earhart, who went missing without a trace over the South Pacific 75 years ago, investigators said Tuesday.

Enhanced analysis of a photograph taken just months after Earhart's Lockheed Electra plane vanished shows what experts think may be the landing gear of the aircraft protruding from the waters off the remote island of Nikumaroro, in what is now the Pacific nation of Kiribati, they said.

Armed with that analysis by the State Department, historians, scientists and salvagers from The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery, are returning to the island in July in the hope of finding the wreckage of Earhart's plane and perhaps even the remains of the pilot and her navigator Fred Noonan.

Ric Gillespie, executive director of the group, acknowledged that the evidence was "circumstantial" but "strong" but stopped short of predicting success. The new search is scheduled to last for 10 days in July and will use state-of-the-art underwater robotic submarines and mapping equipment.

"The most important thing is not whether we find the ultimate answer or what we find, it is the way we look," he said. "We see this opportunity to explore ... the last great American mystery of the 20th century as a vehicle for demonstrating how to go about figuring out what is true."

Earhart and Noonan disappeared July 2, 1937, while flying from New Guinea to Howland Island as part of her attempt to become the first female pilot to circumnavigate the globe.

Extensive searches at the time uncovered nothing and many historians are convinced they crashed into the ocean. In addition, conspiracy theories, including claims that they were U.S. government agents captured by the Japanese before the Second World War, still abound despite having been largely debunked.

Gillepsie's group believes Earhart and Noonan may have managed to land on a reef abutting the atoll, then known as Gardner Island, and survived for a short time. They surmise that the plane was washed off the reef by high tides shortly after the landing and that the wreckage may be found in the deep waters nearby.

Their previous visits to the island have recovered artifacts that could have belonged to Earhart and Noonan and suggest they might have lived for days or weeks. Now, they have the new analysis of the October 1937 photo of the shoreline of the island. Experts say a blurry object sticking out of the water in the lower left corner of the black-and-white photo is consistent with a strut and wheel of a Lockheed Electra landing gear.

Renowned oceanographer Robert Ballard, who discovered the wreckage of the Titanic and the Bismarck and is advising the Earhart expedition, said the new analysis of the photograph could be the equivalent of a "smoking gun" as it narrows the search area from tens of thousands of square miles to a manageable size.

Ballard confessed to having been previously intimidated by the challenge of finding clues to Earhart's whereabouts.

"If you ever want a case of finding a needle in a haystack, this is at the top of the list," he at a State Department event where Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood gave their support and encouragement to the privately financed project.

Clinton hailed Earhart as an inspiration to Americans in difficult times as the nation struggled to emerge from the Great Depression and said her legacy could be a model for the country now.

"Amelia Earhart may have been a unlikely heroine for a nation down on its luck, but she embodies the spirit of an America coming of age and increasingly confident, ready to lead in a quite uncertain and dangerous world," she said. "She gave people hope and she inspired them to dream bigger and bolder."

"Today, we meet at a time when the challenges are not so dire despite what you might hear on cable television or talk radio. But these are still difficult days for many Americans," Clinton said. "After a long decade of war, terrorism and recession, there are some who are asking whether we still have what it takes to lead, and like that earlier generation we too could use some of Amelia's spirit."

"We can be as optimistic and even audacious as Amelia Earhart," she said. "We can be defined not by the limits that hold us down but by the opportunities that are ahead."

The Obama administration takes no position on any of purported evidence and acknowledges there is fierce debate on the subject. But Clinton, who noted that the State Department and other federal agencies had actively supported Earhart's flight, cheered the searchers on.

"Even if you do not find what you seek, there is great honor and possibility in the search itself," she said. "So, like our lost heroine, you will all carry our hopes ... We are excited and looking forward to hear about your own great adventure."

What Might Have Been~ Being Home - The TRUTH About Motherhood

Being Home ~ I?m sure many of you who read this blog regularly have been wondering where the hell I have been. Life?s been incredibly busy lately. I know, you are all playing your tiny little violins and having a teenie tiny pity party for me. It?s okay. It?s been busy and chaotic but in a really wonderful way. I?m trying to get my bearings in a new reality. It?s sort of like learning to walk for the first time. I?m a bit wobbly and I?ve fallen a couple of times ( metaphorically)? i.e. the missing in action status. I am here, reading your comments and missing you all desperately but it seems every time that I turn around some new and exciting situation is presenting itself .

Aside from all of the wonderful working opportunities that we have been blessed with lately, there has been a house on the market for over a year now that we desperately want to sell so that we can move out of a holding pattern and on with our lives. This past week we were informed on a Tuesday that we needed to relocate our packed boxes out of our garage and storage area in our basement and to a storage facility. Yes, we needed to move all of our stored belongings out of our $1300 a month storage unit ( the house we pay for and don?t live in) and into another storage unit (an additional? $100 a month for storage, 4 days away from work, $60 for a uhaul to move the boxes and my husbands back that went out while moving the boxes). This was all done because a potential buyer couldn?t see passed the stacked boxes of our lives in the garage. This is how desperate we are to sell this house. Have I mentioned that we have been living in a bedroom at my in laws?

While we were there, I was flooded with what might have been. This is the house we moved to when Ella was 5 months old. We uprooted our entire lives so that we could raise our girls nearer to family. This is the house where Ella said her first words, learned to walk, had her first play date and celebrated every single birthday up until this year.? This is the house where Abbi was conceived, came home from the hospital to, learned to roll over and crawl, say mama and got her first booboo. This is where she came home and danced in her very first pair of ballet slippers, this is the place she became a little girl. This is the house where the Big Guy got down on his knee and re-proposed, on our 11th wedding anniversary because the first time he was too nervous and just blurted it out. This house has been our home almost since we have become a family. Within these walls, I learned the true definition of what it is to be a mothers. Being home, I realized that this house holds my heart.

Life has been difficult for the past 3 years with all the moving, job changes, commuter marriage, changing schools and now living with our in laws. The girls have missed a lot of the type of childhood that we had dreamed for them. Don?t get me wrong, they are blessed. We all are. We have our health ( knock on wood), we have love and we are together. Really, what more could you hope for in life?

I mean the little things, the simple things that we all take for granted that I was reminded of this weekend in our home. Sleeping in your own bed. Knowing that you are home. Playing with your toys without rebuke or being chastised for making a mess.Sitting down for dinner just the 4 of us, at our table and talking, laughing, being sincerely happy. Being home. Watching the girls play with all their toys, climbing on the swing, and playing with their neighborhood friends made me happy.Going to familiar places, driving down familiar streets and being someplace where you feel you belong; like falling into a comfy lounge in the warm sun. Being home.

That?s where I?ve been. I?ve missed you madly. I loved being home, even if it had no internet and it was pack and move stuff to storage.? There is no option for us to return to that city. It?s hard to say goodbye to the only ?home? we?ve ever known.

How do you say goodbye to people and places that are your home; the very things that make up your memories? How do you leave after being home?
